Balance & Cumulative Equity Curve Architecture

The Balance & Equity Curve chart is the primary visual benchmark of trading consistency in ILoveTrading. Rendered via dynamic Recharts SVG curves, it tracks the cumulative growth trajectory of your account equity across sequential trade lifecycles or chronological calendar days.

1. Mathematical Formulation & Growth Modeling

Account equity updates sequentially with each closed execution, factoring in raw gross profits, losses, broker commissions, and swap fees:

Formula / Calculation

Cumulative Equity_t = Initial Balance + Σ (i=1)^t (Realized Net PnL_i)

Where (Realized Net PnL_i = Gross PnL_i - Commission_i - Swap_i).

2. Granularity & Grouping Toggles

Located directly in the top-right toolbar of the chart widget, two distinct aggregation modes allow traders to switch perspectives:

1. By Day (group_by_day)

Aggregates all executions closed within the same UTC trading day into a single daily data point.

  • Analytical Purpose: Evaluates calendar consistency, day-to-day balance stability, and chronological drawdown recovery cycles.
  • Behavior: Days with no trading activity maintain a flat horizontal line, preserving real-world timeline spacing.

2. By Trade (group_by_trade)

Plots every individual trade sequentially along the X-axis (e.g., Trade #1, Trade #2 ... Trade #500).

  • Analytical Purpose: Strips out calendar gaps (weekends and inactive days) to isolate the pure mathematical edge and sequence distribution of your strategy.

3. Interactive Timeline Panning & <Brush> Zooming

For active traders with high execution counts, dense curves can compress subtle micro-drawdowns. The integrated interactive <Brush> component enables precise temporal inspection:

  • Horizontal Slider Controls: Drag the left and right anchor handles at the bottom of the widget to constrain the viewport to a specific trading week, month, or drawdown phase.
  • Dynamic Window Panning: Click and drag the highlighted viewport box to slide chronologically across your entire trading history without resetting zoom levels.
  • Synchronized Tooltips: Hovering over any data point renders instant dark/light mode tooltips displaying the exact trade date, execution ticket, and cumulative balance.

4. Diagnostic Curve Typologies

Your equity curve visualizes subconscious trading psychology and risk control:

Curve TypologyVisual PatternRoot Behavioral Cause
Institutional Edge45-degree upward slope with shallow drawdownsStrict 1R risk management, asymmetric profit targets, and steady discipline.
Revenge DropGradual upward stair-step followed by a vertical cliffDisabling stop-losses, revenge trading, or aggressive martingale position sizing.
Expectancy BleedContinuous downward slope with brief spikesNegative mathematical expectancy, high broker commission drag, or trading into market chop.
High Drawdown Boom-BustWild parabolic spikes followed by severe 50%+ dropsOverleveraging; winning big on luck but failing risk-of-ruin thresholds.

5. Best Practices & Troubleshooting

Tip

[!TIP] Drawdown Forensics: Whenever your curve forms a deep "valley," use the <Brush> tool to isolate the start and trough dates. Cross-reference these dates in the Trading Calendar to identify specific emotional mistakes or strategy breakdowns.

Note

[!NOTE] Multi-Account Aggregation: If multiple accounts are selected in the account dropdown, the equity curve dynamically aggregates their starting balances and realized yields into a unified portfolio curve.
